Chemical Reactions

I. For the chemical reaction : C4H10 + O2 ------> CO2 + H2O
a) Balance the equation.
b) Why do we have to balance chemical equations?
c) What is the type of reaction?
d) If you start with 3 moles of Butane with enough oxygen, how many moles of water will be formed?

II. John has burned 756 g of log completely in his fire place to heat up his house. At the end of this process, John  was left with 106g of ashes.Describe in detail whether matter was destroyed or not during this process?

    a) 2 C4H10 + 13 O2 = 8 CO2 + 10 H2O
    b) we haveto balancing chemical equations to determine quantities of reactants or products.
    c)Combination
    d)1
    II.
Matter was not destroyed because of the law of conservation, which say mass can not be created nor destoyed. The log was just burnt into ashes. It still has the same mass.

    A)2C4H10+13O2=8CO2+10H20
B)You balance equations to determine the quantities of the reactants and products.
    C)combustion
    D)15 mol H2O

The law of conservation states that no mass can be created or destroyed. The log's mass was not destroyed, it was in a different state as ashes, but it was the same 106g of the log.

  3. a). 2 C4H10 + 13 O2 = 8 CO2 + 10 H2O
b). Balancing chemical equations is important because it tells us the amount and quantities of the products and reactants.
    c). combustion
    d).15 mol of H2O

II. Matterr wasn't destroyed or lost during this process. It wouldn't be possible because the law of conservation of mass states that matter can't be created nor destroyed. The log didn't lose mass it was just "replaced" when the log changed physical states.

  4. A. 2C4H10 + 13O2= 8CO2 + 10H2O
    B. Balancing equations is important because it allows it side to be balanced (or equal),and tell us the amount of the products and reactants.
    C. Combustion
    D. 15 mol of H2O

II. Matter wasn't destroyed, as according to Law of Conservation matter cannot be created nor destroyed. As the log was just turned into ashes, as the mass is still there.
